Make sense out of nonsense

Once I have gathered in all of the documentary evidence that can be found, I set about recreating the soldier’s story.

This is far from easy and, with digitisation having made the searches much easier than they once were, is the part where most people struggle. Why? They are full of unfamiliar jargon, abbreviations, acronyms and references to obscure regulations. Over the years and thousands of projects, there are not too many of these things that puzzle me now.

From all of that, I will assemble a plain-English narrative of the story. It will go through in chronological order exactly what happened to the soldier, as far as it is possible to tell. If he experienced any kind of special event, such as being wounded, taken prisoner or killed in action, I will show you exactly where it took place and explain the circumstances in reasonable detail.
