It is a good idea to assemble as much knowledge as you can before you even begin a military search: the man’s full name, year of birth, where he came from and the name of his parent or wife are all fairly essential, especially if you are unsure of his regiment or number.
Photographs can be valuable if they show a cap badge, or medal ribbons, or rank insignia or something that might hint at a location.
