Researching a soldier of the British Army of 1914-1918

Our core business.

When do you need us?

There are three primary reasons why you might need to engage our help in researching your soldier.

Reason 1: you can not find your man in an internet search : many records have now been digitised and are available on the Pay-Per-View genealogy websites. But not all. In some cases the indexing is of poor quality or for some other reason you simply can't find him. Perhaps you know he was Private 1234 but this does not come up in a search. Or you just can't tell him from among others.

Index

Hmm. How much patience do you have?

Reason 2: you can not get to the archives: despite digitisation and access through the internet, many of the important documents are held in archives that you may not find easy or economic to visit. You may not have time; travel costs would render a trip not worthwhile; you’re not sure what to look for anyway.

Home

This is our natural home: the National Archives at Kew, London. Most of our archival search work takes place here, but on occasion it takes us to the British Library, Imperial War Museum or other places.

Reason 3: you do not understand what military documents tell you: even if you can find them yourself, military documents can be very difficult to understand. They are full of codes, abbreviations, acronyms, numbers, squiggles and everything designed to baffle you!

Confused? You will be!

This is where we come in. Over 25 years of experience; almost 4000 similar projects – and you learn quite a lot! Whether you have found documents or we have found them for you, we’ll interpret the tiniest detail and turn it into a clear narrative so that you really understand the man’s career.
