Researching a soldier of the British Army of 1914-1918

Our core business. We research soldiers of the British Army of the First World War. That’s it. We’ll go back to the Boer War or even the Sudan if the WW1 soldier served then, but otherwise we do not cover earlier eras. Records of men who served after 1921 are not yet public, so we can’t cover those eras.

How can fourteeneighteen help you? Three levels of service

We recognise that our clients needs vary, depending on what they have already achieved and what they are seeking to achieve.
We've designed three packages of research services to suit their needs and their budgets.

Service
*** Comprehensive **DocsPlus *DocsOnly
This service is best for
clients who ...

Want to understand in as much depth as possible the soldier's military career, where he was and what he did.

Want to have an in-depth report for a gift or keepsake.

Do not need an in-depth report but would value the key facts being highlighted. Do not need any form of advice or interpretation on what the documents say.
We will search for these records (standard to all three services) ...

Payment options and other notes

  • Payments can be made to us
    • online using PayPal
    • online via our bank RBS Worldpay which takes major credit/debit cards
    • for UK clients only, by cheque
    • other by arrangement in advance.
  • Clients can “upgrade” from DocsOnly or DocsPlus to Comprehensive as a second stage of work if they wish, at any time.

Reduced final fee

  • In the event of us not finding any records or where we are unable to make a unique identification (typically where the subjects regiment and number is not known, no service records exist and there is more than one man of the same name in the medals index) there will be a fixed fee of £30 to pay.
  • For clients who have ordered our Comprehensive or DocsOnly service we will always reduce our fee below the maximum shown where gaps remain in the soldier’s story due to absence of documents or meagre information contained on those to that do exist. This does not apply to our DocsPlus service.
  • There are three types of reporting problem that we reflect on reduced fees:
    • When the man’s service record can not be found;
      • In this event (which applies to perhaps two thirds of all searches) we will reconstruct the man’s story as far as possible from the details found in other sources.
      • This will trigger an automatic reduction in fee, by a value depending on findings and how complex it is to determine what happened to the man.
      • In the worst case, typically where a man served in one of the large Corps where medal rolls are uninformative, we will effectively treat the project as a DocsOnly service and therefore invoice a fee of £35 rather than £59 or £99.
      • In other cases the fee will be somewhere between £59 and £99.
    • When the service record is found but is badly damaged, illegible or where documents or important information is missing;
      • We will reconstruct the man’s story as far as possible from the service record and details found in other sources.
      • This may trigger an automatic reduction in fee, by a value depending on findings and how complex it is to determine what happened to the man.
      • It is difficult to be precise about the extent to which we can reduce the fee but undertake to do so if justified.

Paper copy

We regret that we have now withdrawn the option to have all documents printed and posted to you. This is due to *this being rarely ordered *quality of some documents meaning the printed copy is less legible than digital copy *with a lot of material needing to be sent to you, the cost is prohibitively high.

We can arrange to print our report (but not soldier's documents) as a step after sending to you electronically and will be delighted to discuss terms for this at the time.
