Matthew Henry Driver

Hull-born Matthew Henry Driver enlisted into the 13th (Service) Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, one of the four “Hull Pals” battalions, in January 1915. He served with the battalion up to his death at Serre on 13 November 1916, having initially gone with the original contingent for some fruitless weeks on the Suez Canal. His brother Richard was taken prisoner in the same attack; their brother Fred died at Ypres the following year, serving with the 6th (Service) Battalion. Matthew has no known grave and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial, as are so many Hull men who lost their lives at Serre in July and November 1916.
